Chaitali's Rice University 2007 Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni Award

Earlier this month (2nd Nov 2007) I had the priviledge of receiving the Rice University Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni Award for 2007, awarded by the Rice Engineering Alumini (REA) organization, the oldest alumni special interest group at Rice, being formed in 1938. It was great to be back at Duncan Hall and meet many of my professors and other Rice ECE folks!

I was asked to speak for 15 minutes after the award ceremony, which was part of the annual REA meeting. As I was thinking about a topic to talk about, I had several moments of something quite close to panic, as I realized that I have never really spoken publicly about anything other than technical topics. I am quite comfortable talking wireless, talking cell phones, talking Windows and Linux and GSM and CDMA – but when it comes to addressing this distinguished audience and sharing something that would be interesting to REA folks, I was quite at a loss …… Then I started thinking about how I got here and the last 12 years since I first came to Rice, and then the last 7-8 years since I have been out of Rice, and then the last two years which has been the most incredible time for me personally as well as professionally. And I realized that given the fact that all I have been thinking/dreaming/breathing in the last few years is this entity that we now call “SNRLabs” – the best topic I have to share with my audience is my experiences as I have been going thru this most incredible ride with my husband and partner in everything, Sudipta, and the rest of our incredible SNRLabs team.

Which is how the REA presentation and the following slide set came about. Please follow this link for the slides to hear about what I learnt as we have built SNRLabs!

SNRLabs in PT Expo, Beijing, October 2007

We’re back! Back in China that is… to attend Beijing PT Expo. Talk about the crowds! It was packed. Beijing’s so different from Shanghai, it’s like LA and NYC. In Beijing I noticed the Mandarin spoken is very classic/original and they roll their tongues a lot.

As people move from inland China i.e. Beijing and moving towards the sea like the coastal cities i.e. Shanghai, there’s a distinct mandarin tongue rolling reduction. Beijing is a very cultured place with many historical places, and food there is awesome. A must-try is Peking Duck at Quanjude.

The clientele we met in PT Expo are very consumer-end focused and it gave a lot of insights into ULC phone requirements. We had an exclusive interview with China’s electronics media portal, EEFOCUS that were very excited about our technology and startup process and our first Chinese news article is now published!

Hua-wei and ZTE had a huge presence in PT Expo (Bigger than 3GSM Barcelona 07).  Hua-Wei’s US headquarter is actually very nearby to our office in Plano TX. Hua-Wei had a very good IMS infrastructure demo showing presence management and I’m looking forward to IMS services being introduced to consumers in US.
